Incipit

Form

Song without words — Allegretto grazioso, A major. From Mendelssohn's Op. 62 set. RH arpeggios provide the accompaniment while the melody emerges in the inner voice (LH thumb).

Teaching points

  • Inner-voice melody — the tune is in the LH thumb, surrounded by RH broken chords. Practise hands separately first
  • Articulation: the broken-chord accompaniment should sound like a soft pulse, not a melody. Voicing is the whole exercise
  • Practical: Grade 7 piano staple
